The lungs are two air-filled spongy organs positioned on either side of the chest (thorax). Through its tubular branches called bronchi, the trachea (windpipe) transports breathed air to the lungs. The bronchi subsequently split into increasingly minute branches (bronchioles), until they become microscopic.
